Interactive play sets and collectible figures sit in an odd space: they are toys for children, about animals, and often contain very small parts.

Age marks are about parts, not difficulty

An age guidance is usually there because of small components and choking risk, not because a younger child could not work out the toy. That is why it is worth reading even when the child is clearly capable.

Batteries

Anything that moves or makes a sound has a battery compartment, and the small round cells used in compact toys are the ones to be most careful about. Check that the compartment is properly secured after every change.

Keep the pieces together

Play sets lose their appeal once half the accessories have gone. A box or bag that lives with the set is what keeps it playable a year later.

Not for the actual pet

Worth saying plainly: a collectible animal figure is a children’s toy, not a dog toy. The materials and construction are not intended to be chewed.
