Rotating a Toy Box So Nothing Gets Boring

The cheapest way to make a pet’s toys more interesting is to make fewer of them available at once.

Why rotation works

Novelty is what drives play. A toy that has been out of sight for a fortnight is effectively new again, at no cost. Leaving everything available permanently means nothing is ever new.

A simple system

Split the collection into two or three sets. Keep one set out, the rest away, and swap them over every week or two. Keep one or two comfort items permanently available — those are the exception, and taking them away is unkind rather than stimulating.

Rotate by type, not at random

Each set works better if it contains a mix: something to chew, something to chase, something to solve. A week of nothing but chew toys is not a rotation, it is a gap.

Use the swap as an inspection

Rotation day is a natural moment to check every toy for damage and wash what needs washing. That habit does more for safety than any single purchasing decision.
